Ted Louise is on a mission: making a revolutionary change in the leather industry

At Ted Louise we are always looking for ways to improve our products and it is clear that the leather industry needs a big change for the better.

We discovered a tanning method that truly revolutionizes leather tanning and it is called Zeology-Leather We are the first leather bag brand in Europa that is making a complete collection with this leather. Zeolog-Leather is leather tanned with Zeology, a game-changing tanning agent based on zeolites and free of chrome, aldehyde, and heavy metals. Zeology-Leather is real, natural leather that is certified free from harmful substances and consists of circular chemistry. This makes the leather in your shoe, bag, or lounge chair compostable and biodegradable. You can even return it to the earth. Want to learn more about the proces? The steps are written down below.

Zeology-Leather: human- and environmentally friendly tanned leather

Step 1:

Good to know: Leather tanning is the process of transforming an animal hide into leather.

Zeology is a compound of substances used for tanning animal hides into leather. An animal hide is not immediately suitable for use as leather; it first needs to be processed to prevent decomposition.

Zeology is unique because it is free from chrome, aldehydes, and dangerous chemicals. This ensures that workers are not exposed to dangerous substances and that no polluted materials end up in wastewater.

Step 2:

Good to know: Cowhides are a byproduct or waste product of the meat industry. If not utilized, these hides are burned, releasing significant amounts of CO2, which is harmful to the environment. Processing animal hides into leather therefore contributes to the sustainability of the process.

After tanning, the leather results in white sheets of leather called Zeo-Whites. At this stage, the leather is ready to be dyed and prepared for the production of goods. Once the Zeo-White hides are dyed, they are referred to as Zeology Leather.

One of the greatest advantages of these Zeo-White hides is that they are biodegradable! Within 90 days, these hides can decompose into the earth without leaving behind harmful substances.

Step 3:

Good to know: Compared to conventional tanning methods, Zeology-Leather stands out immediately due to its white color. Traditional methods result in blue hides. The white hides make it possible to dye the leather in white and vibrant colors.

The leather is fully ready to be used in crafting the most stunning designs. A premium product is created as Zeology-Leather retains its superior quality, and Ted Louise bags are handmade with care.

Even at this stage, production workers are not exposed to toxic substances like chrome.

Step 4:

Good to know: When making a leather product, there is always leftover waste. This can include small pieces of leather that remain after cutting the parts to size.

The leather left over after producing a Zeology-Leather bag can be ground into small pieces. This ground waste can be recycled as compost. Yes, you read that correctly: it can be sold as fertilizer because the hides are not processed with toxic chemicals.

With conventional leather, it works very differently. Due to the chemicals used, this waste must be processed by a chemical company, which has negative effects on the environment.
